In 1988, China ratified the UN Convention Against Torture (CAT) and since then it has submitted several reports to the UN Committee Against Torture.

• Its latest such report was submitted in 2007.

At the same time several human rights organizations also submitted so-called shadow reports to the UN, exposing the widespread use of torture in China.
